Spanish Immersion Program
In fall 2020, Scott Lane launched Santa Clara Unified School District's first Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, a different and more enriching model of educating students in two languages, to give students districtwide an opportunity to become bilingual and bi-literate, starting in elementary school.
What is Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI)?
Dual language immersion programs include native English-speaking students and native speakers of a foreign language. The goals of DLI programs are to develop bilingualism/biliteracy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural competencies for all students.

Enrollment
We strongly recommend you attend one of our upcoming “Orientation Sessions,” but it is not a condition of completing an Open Enrollment Application.
For transitional kindergarten (TK) through 1st grade, first enroll your child at your school of residence. Once you receive your permanent student identification number, you can apply for Open Enrollment to the DLI program during the Open Enrollment lottery process — applications open on January 7, 2026, and close on February 6, 2026. Submitting an Open Enrollment application does not guarantee placement in the program. The site will contact accepted families to complete an assessment for the program.
For more information regarding the Open Enrollment process and notification period, refer to the district website.
For 2nd-5th grade, first enroll your child at your school of residence and then contact the Enrollment Center at enrollment@scusd.net or 408-423-3596 to assist you with scheduling an assessment for the program.
Transitioning to Middle School
As students transition from elementary to middle school, the DLI pathway continues at Buchser Middle School to expand their linguistic skills while supporting high levels of academic achievement.
Students in the DLI pathway emerge as confident, culturally aware communicators prepared to thrive in a multilingual world — carrying forward the literacy, academic, and interpersonal strengths built over years of learning in two languages.
