Principal
It is an honor to introduce myself as the new Principal of Scott Lane Elementary. I am a dedicated and experienced educator with over two decades of service to students, families, and schools. Before joining Scott Lane, I served as the Principal of Laurel Elementary, the largest Title I school in the San Mateo-Foster City School District. Prior to that, I was an Assistant Principal and Vice Principal in both Sunnyvale and East Palo Alto, where I supported Spanish dual immersion programs, led state assessments, and helped design and facilitate professional development for teachers. My years in the classroom teaching fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth grades in both English and Spanish, along with my earlier work as a paraeducator with multilingual learners at this very district, have given me a well-rounded and deeply grounded perspective as an educator and as a leader.
At the heart of my work is a commitment to building a kind, welcoming, and inclusive school community, one where every student and family feels seen, valued, and supported. I believe that strong, positive relationships are the foundation of learning, and I am dedicated to fostering a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and respect. As a bilingual Latino leader, I bring a personal understanding of the experiences of families who are not native speakers of English or who have historically been underrepresented, and I’m passionate about creating spaces where all voices are heard.
I’m originally from Queens, New York, and my family moved to San Jose when I was young. My parents are from Colombia, a country I’m deeply proud to call part of my heritage. My wife Natalia and I live in Campbell with our two children, Isabella (18) and Alexander (14), and our bright-eyed pup, Kylo Cody, who keeps us all on our toes. Whenever I can, you’ll find me up in Tahoe snowboarding, one of my favorite ways to recharge and stay connected to what brings me joy.
I’m thrilled to be joining the Scott Lane community and look forward to partnering with our students, staff, and families to continue building a school we can all be proud to call our own.
Warmly,
~Nelson Hunter
